Time for a Good Laugh

“Lighten up, Francis”. Many of us can remember that iconic scene in Stripes, when Francis Soyer says, “Any of you guys call me Francis and I’ll kill you.”, and Sergeant Hulka’s classic reply to lighten his mood and to not take things so seriously.

Boy oh boy can I relate to that one. When did life get so serious and when did laughter, play, and delight take a backseat?

I asked this while on a call with my friend Monica today. I mean with California, Oregon and Washington burning, a pandemic and a major election in our midst, how does one compartmentalize and shift gears?  And do it without a cocktail or two? (And no judgement if you do).

As I continued my conversation with Monica she said, “Sometimes you just want to get a burger and not worry if it’s healthy or not.”  Yeah, why all the meaning?  As she continued to give all these examples I started to laugh and laugh hard.

I am going to take a sabbatical from seriousness and invite delight, play and laughter to ride in the front seat. My birthday is just around the corner and I can’t think of a better way to start this journey around the sun. Victor Borge said it best, “Laughter is the shortest distance between two people.”  Even thinking of my conversation with Monica still makes me laugh.

Try it. Reach out to someone in the absurdity of it all and have a good laugh, you’ll be glad you did.

Together we journey,

Louisa
